Adventure Sports: America

Published: 01/23/2015

Over the last several posts, we have looked at adventure sports opportunities in Europe, Asia, and Australia. If you have been following along, you know we have discovered some pretty amazing things. From mountain biking to tubing, there is always an exciting experience waiting around the corner. You just have to go find it.

In the final instalment of this series, we will look at adventure sports in the Americas. If you are planning a trip across the Pond for your holiday this year, consider checking out some of the following opportunities:

Tandem Skydiving – Las Vegas, USA

Although skydiving is not uniquely American, the commercial atmosphere of the States lends itself very well to unique skydiving experiences. One of them is a tandem skydiving opportunity aimed at visitors to Las Vegas. It is an experience intended to introduce non-skydivers to the sport. How does it work? The customer is strapped securely to a veteran skydiver after a quick lesson and the signing of the consent form. Then both go up in the plane and jump together. A 60-second free-fall is followed by a slow and leisurely descent to earth. What makes it so exciting is the view of Nevada.

Dog Sledding – Quebec, Canada

Are you up for a real winter challenge that will test your limits? If so, a dog sledding adventure in Quebec could be your dream holiday. Dog sledding tours begin at the St Maurice Wildlife Reserve, and then carry you across mile after mile of snow-covered trails and frozen waterways. The trips out of St Maurice are relatively short, but there are other tours in Canada that can take you into the wilderness for weeks at a time. You will come to appreciate dogs in a completely new way at the conclusion of your adventure.

Wake Boarding – The Bahamas

What do you get when you combine water skiing, surfing, and snowboarding? Wake boarding, of course! And there is no better place in the world to enjoy this adventure sport than the Bahamas. Although the origins of wake boarding are found in Australia, the Bahamas offer near-perfect weather – and water – year-round. The temperature variation is only slight while the rain, even during the wettest months, comes only in brief, but intense, downpours. Warm, tropical breezes provide the crowning jewel.

Snow Shoeing – Argentina

The Patagonia region of Argentina is an incredible place to go snow shoeing thanks to the spectacular Andes Mountains. Deep mountain canyons and mighty peaks share nature's space with beautiful lakes and running streams that rarely freeze during the winter months. Snow shoeing gives you the opportunity to get out and enjoy the awesome beauty of winter in an environment that is not as harsh as other places, such as Alaska or Nordic Europe.

We hope this four-part series on adventure sports has given you plenty of great ideas for your next holiday. If you like adrenaline rushes and pushing yourself further than you thought you could go, an adventure sports holiday is just what you are looking for. Enjoy!
