The Best Hikes in the World

Published: 01/02/2013

If you are interested in a more adventurous holiday than simply lying on the beach or sitting in the bar, you might want to consider doing some hiking. Walking for hours every day might not be what everyone considers a relaxing way to spend your precious holiday time, but this really can be the most rewarding holiday ever. There is just something so fantastic about taking to the roads and walking for miles and miles each day – it is superb exercise for not only the body but also the mind. Here are some of the most exciting walks in the world that you may want to consider.

The Appalachian Trail, United States

The Appalachian Trail has been one of the most popular trails in the world for the last fifty years. It is a 2,175-mile walk and it takes at least 100 days to complete – for most people it will be more like 150 days. This walk traditionally begins in Springer Mountain in Georgia and goes all the way to Mount Katahdin in Maine – of course, you could also go in the opposite direction. This walk is a challenge, but there are reasonable facilities along the way. It is believed that at least ten thousand people have managed to complete the whole thing.

Camino de Santiago de Compostela, Spain

The Camino de Santiago de Compostela is also known in English as the Way of Saint James. It is a pilgrimage walk that is joined by routes from all over Europe. This trail has traditionally been a Christian pilgrimage, but in recent years it is been followed by people from all religious faiths. People have been walking the Camino de Santiago de Compostela for at least 1,000 years. The most popular path to take is the French Way, and it takes about four weeks to complete.

Great Wall of China Walk, China

China is such a vast and fascinating country but one of the most amazing ways to explore this place has to be to walk the Great Wall of China. This is one of the longest walks in the world at over 4,160 miles. It could take as long as a year to complete, but it is sure to be an unforgettable trip. The actual wall is no longer a fully connected structure, but it is possible to walk most of it.

Milford Walk, New Zealand

Most of us will not be able to take months out of our life to go walking, but the Mildford way in New Zealand is something that most of us will be able to manage. This 53 km trial is located in the South Island and passes through some stunning scenery. The path passes through mountains and temperate rain forests.

If you intend to go on a walking holiday, it is vital that you have proper travel insurance. This type of holiday can be satisfying, but there are things that can go wrong. Without proper insurance, a small problem could quickly turn into a huge disaster.
