Top 5 Surfing Beaches in the World

Published: 10/24/2012

Surfing is one of the most satisfying water activities possible. There is just something so thrilling about catching a wave and going with. It is really connecting with nature and working with it. I know that when I’m out on a surfboard it is an escape from my everyday problems and concerns. It is just me and the board against the world. One of the things that I love most to do is to travel around the world to surf. Here are my top 5 choices for the best surfing beaches on the planet.

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands (Spain)

Fuerteventura is an excellent place to go surfing.  The water here is perfect and the temperature never falls below eighteen degrees Celsius. There are some great waves, and good surfing for beginners to experts. This surfing beach is on the same latitude as Florida, but it is off the coast of Africa. The best surfing can be found here from October to March, but the weather is excellent here all year round.

Gold Coast, Australia

The Gold Coast in Australia definitely offers one of the best surfing experiences on the planet. Some would say that it is the nearest thing to surfing paradise that there is. There is over 70 km of beach here to choose from, so there is never any problem finding somewhere peaceful to take to the waves. The climate is great all year round, and the waves here are also fantastic. The only problem that most of us have in Europe is that this type of trip to the other side of the world can be expensive, but most surfers will agree that it is worth the expense.

Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

The Mentawai Islands are just off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia and they offer the best surfing in South East Asia. There are actually many beaches on these islands to choose from so visitors will never have any excuse for boredom. The islands are tropical paradises and well worth visiting for this alone, but the best action is to be found in the sea among the waves.

Costa Rica Beaches

The beaches of Costa Rica are another great option for those of us who love to surf. Central America is famous for its beaches and waves, and the Caribbean Sea is always nice and warm – it is like stepping into a warm bath. There are great waves here all year long, and this is a popular spot with pro surfers.

California Beaches

It is arguable that California does not offer the best surfing beaches in the world, but it is the home of surfing for many of us. This is the place where the sport really took off, and it is a great place to take to the waves. The beaches of California are idea for surfing holidays, and there are also plenty of great land based activities to enjoy while not out on the board. The best waves in California are to be found around Santa Cruz.
