We are coming up on that time of year when the weather in Britain can be less than inviting. You know what we're talking about – icy roads and snow-capped rooftops just daring you to come outdoors. For some, winter in Britain is the best season of all. However, for others, winter cannot seem to pass quickly enough. It's for this latter group we offer our suggestions for escaping the British winter.
This is the first in a three-part series designed to guide you in looking for a warm, sunny destination for your winter holidays. Before we do, we need to address flight times. Travel destinations requiring flights are usually divided into three categories:
- short-haul (less than 3 hours of flight time)
- medium-haul (3 to 6 hours of flight time)
- long-haul (6+ hours of flight time).
How long you want to spend travelling will play an important part in deciding where you want to go. We will start by looking at a few short-haul destinations that you can get to fairly cheaply.
Majorca
Majorca is the ultimate short-haul winter destination for UK residents for a number of reasons. First, its Mediterranean climate is just what you need to escape the winter blues. Second, it is relatively close at just over two-hour flight time. And third, it is very affordable. All along the island's coast, you will find resorts and hotels to fit any budget.
While you're on the island, be sure to make the most of the glorious weather by taking in as much of nature as you can. Majorca has an abundance of parks and nature preserves that feature exceptional beauty of all kinds. There are glorious beaches, quiet coves, mountains, and forest regions.
Morocco
We decided to include Morocco as a short-haul destination even though the flight time is just about 3 hours, 14 minutes. Close enough, right? We think so, especially when you consider what this North African country has to offer.
Morocco is somewhat unique in that it has both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline. The Mediterranean region is the place you will want to go for your winter escape. There is no shortage of beautiful beaches where you can soak up the sun to your heart's content. Moreover, just in case you do find you are missing winter, just travel to the interior mountains for a day in the snow.
Cyprus
Economic and political trouble in Cyprus has led some to believe that the Mediterranean nation is not worth visiting. Nevertheless, nothing could be further from the truth. In addition to warm and sunny weather, Cyprus provides a unique cultural experience you will truly not find anywhere else. To experience it all, you will need to travel between the small villages and larger towns, meeting as many people as you can along the way.
