Downunder was incorporated in the UK in March 1992, set up and operated by two New Zealanders, Mike Corless and Stuart Mitchell. 

Downunder Insurance began life as a provider of Motor Insurance products to non-UK residents which was then extremely difficult to find (and still is!).  Our 'Motor Policy' is still going strong, helping travellers and backpackers get right around the UK and Europe on their own wheels.

Rapid expansion followed and we grew to encompass not only Motor Insurance but also insured travellers, personal possessions in flat share, general household, home and contents and commercial businesses.

By the mid nineties, as a result of communicating with and consulting our many young customers, it became blatantly obvious that the way forward was the Backpacker Policy - an insurance package targeting the young adventure traveller - with a good level of cover and far more affordable than the higher priced policies aimed at the family market.

Downunder Insurance were one of the first companies to offer a great quality, affordable direct insurance package in the UK, tailor-made for the long haul backpacking and gap year customer.

Over the years we have continued to source the best worldwide insurance policies at the best premiums for both UK and overseas travellers.

Following Downunder UK's success, Downunder New Zealand was set up in February 2000 to directly provide travel insurance solutions both online and via telephone to thousands of young Kiwis that travel worldwide every year.  Downunder Insurance NZ was the first direct-sell product to hit the Antipodean marketplace and at the same time we launched our online travel insurance business in Australia which is supported by the New Zealand office.
