A truck crash in Jamaica that killed 14 people has demonstrated the need for backpackers to buy
online travel insurance.
According to Caribbean Net News, Jamaica Gleaner reported that a truck carrying itinerant merchants was backing down a narrow valley road when it tipped over a precipice and fell into Portland's Rio Grande Valley. The accident killed 14 of the truck's passengers, with seven managing to scramble free. Rescue teams were at the scene for over 12 hours removing casualties from the wrecked truck with the help of local residents.
The prime minister, Bruce Golding, visited the scene the next day and praised the efforts of the rescuers. According to the website, he said: "It is during emergency cases like this one that we see the real Jamaican spirit of love and unity."
Backpackers should always buy
gap year travel insurance before setting off on a trip as overseas accidents can sometimes run up medical bills of thousands of pounds without the necessary cover.
