Working backpackers should buy worldwide travel insurance

Backpackers who plan to work while travelling should ensure that their cheap travel insurance provides the necessary cover.

According to International Travel Insurance Journal, UK insurer Essential Travel has warned backpackers who plan to work on their travels to be wary of the kind of jobs that they agree to undertake. While working odd jobs for a week or so here and there can be a good way to fund the next part of a trip, some jobs may not be covered by an online travel insurance policy.

Philip Jordan, director of marketing for UK insurer Essential Travel, told the website: "[Backpackers] should know never to use power tools like electric drills or saws, or to drive heavy-duty vehicles. If they do and they're injured, they will usually not be covered by their travel insurance."

Backpackers should either ensure that they buy one way travel insurance that covers them for the specific job they are undertaking, or opt for a job that is less likely to result in an accident.
