Visitors intending to take advantage of the reduction in tourist numbers to Otago in New Zealand's South Island could first buy
online travel insurance.
Otago Daily Times reports that hotels and hostels in the region have recorded dramatic drops in occupancy rates in recent months as travellers choose to stay closer to home in response to the global economic downturn.
December occupancy rates were down by nearly 11 per cent on 2007 figures. The result is fewer people in the region, something that could be an intriguing prospect for people planning a trip but who are keen to avoid the usual crowds.
Michael Baines, chief executive of the Motel Association of New Zealand in Wellington, told the paper: "We are aware of the problems particularly in Queenstown ... we are noticing the traditional tourist areas are not getting traditional tourists."
The South Island offers some of the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand, and Queenstown is often favoured by backpackers and budget travellers for its extreme sports. All visitors have the option of buying
backpacker travel insurance.
