A travel expert has predicted Istanbul is likely to see a significant rise in visitor numbers after being named the next European Capital of Culture,

According to the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office, the city will see an influx of British travellers as it prepares to take on its 2012 title.
The office's director Irfan Onal noted that UK holidaymakers currently make up the third-largest group of overseas visitors to the country, just behind Germans and Russians.
He estimated that around 2.1 million British tourists visited the country in the first nine months of this year and anticipates that more will follow in forthcoming years.
