Backpacker travel insurance customers and their fellow holidaymakers have been reminded of the importance of checking their passport renewal date well before their trip.
Travel association Abta advises that consumers do not need to wait until they reach the expiry date as the passport office will add the additional time to the new document.
Latest figures reveal a decline in the number of people applying for new documentation, reflecting an overall fall in overseas travel.
Sean Tipton, a spokesperson for the organisation, said there had been a direct correlation in the statistics, with a ten per cent fall each way.
Published by the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee on the Home Office's financial management, the report also suggested many are leaving it until the latest date possible before renewing their passport.
