An attempted night-time theft on a female backpacker in the Australian town of Bundaberg serves as a reminder of the availability of
worldwide travel insurance.
News Mail reports that three men broke into the town's Grand Hotel one evening in February and stole keys from the backpacker, before returning during the night to steal her belongings as she slept in a private room.
She woke and screamed, at which point the men ran from the room empty-handed and were later arrested, with one of them now having been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Hostels are frequently a popular choice for backpackers as they tend to offer cheaper rates which are more suitable for people on a budget, although standards have also greatly improved in recent years.
While hostels are also a great place to meet up with other people,
gap year travel insurance is always an option as guests can be more exposed to theft owing to the communal nature of the accommodation.
Princess Eugenie recently suffered an attempted mugging while backpacking in Cambodia, according to the Sun.
