A growing number of people on gap years who may have taken out
cheap travel insurance are looking for environmentally-friendly travel options, it has been suggested.
Gapyear.com has claimed that older gap year travellers tend to be more discerning and as a result are keen to go on green gap years.
Tom Griffiths, founder of Gapyear.com, said: "They want to get involved with something that does help save the planet."
He continued: "The places they go to, they want to make sure they are not contributing to the economies where the money gets filtered out to international companies."
A recent study carried out by responsibletravel.com found that marine conservation projects have become a big attraction for people planning their gap years, many of whom may have taken out
worldwide travel insurance.
Mr Griffiths added that older people on gap years are also often keen to stay on a project for longer than a year.
Many more people are taking gap years at the moment because of the recession, with young people leaving full-time employment choosing to spend a year gaining new experiences rather than trying to find work in a highly competitive labour market.
