The Idaho Mountain Express claims that walkers saw the solitary creature in a canyon in the Pioneer Mountains.
Craig Barry, the man who made the sighting, told that paper that he saw what looked like an "old mangy fox" before realising what it was.
Mr Barry said he and his girlfriend had been hiking at around 10,000 feet and was surprised to see the animal so high in the mountains.
Wildlife group Conservation Northwest describe the wolverine as a solitary and shy creature which needs space and quiet to thrive.
In 2000, a number of conservation groups petitioned the US government to protect wolverines as an endangered species.
The petition was recently denied but a spokesperson for the conservation group said: "We'll continue to push for protection for the wild and wiley wolverine."
