Backpackers supporting a proposal to extend the opening hours of clubs in Cairns, Australia, to 05:00 (local time) each morning could find
cheap travel insurance handy.
The Weekend Post reports that travellers have recommended later opening times and staggered closes to reduce the likelihood of problems in the streets after nights out.
Backpackers often view Cairns as a youth-oriented party town and people interviewed by the Post did not think that the town's late-night drinking culture reduces interest in other local attractions.
British backpacker Emily Hall, 21, told the paper: "Without tourism, Cairns wouldn't be on the map. What has happened with the 24-hour licence in the UK is it has stopped people from binge drinking."
Supporters of later opening times say that there are likely to be fewer incidents that need police involvement as street crowds will be reduced.
Gap year travel insurance is an option to cover against any accidents.
In addition to its party culture, Cairns offers day-trips to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest of its kind in the world.
