Backpackers are advised to look for
gap year travel insurance when seeking surfing experiences in Australia, reports etravelblackboard.com.
According to the Australian government, surfing is one of the major sources of income for the tourism industry in New South Wales (NSW), with over $10 million spent on lessons throughout the course of last year. While nearly 850,000 Australians went surfing on holiday in 2007, around 445,000 backpackers from around the world also converged on the region and fed millions into over 30 surf schools.
Jodi McKay, the minister for tourism, told etravelblackboard.com: "Surfing is a healthy experience which is appealing to both domestic and international visitors and is also delivering an economic boost to communities right along the NSW coast."
A surfing competition, the Beachley Classic, held in the popular backpacker region of Manly in Sydney, was held last week as part of a continuing effort to promote the sport in Australia.
