Backpackers planning an overseas trip could investigate the record of the gap year company they are going with and they could also buy
cheap travel insurance.
Gapforce advises backpackers to look into companies through a Google search, as around 30 per cent of gap year trips are affected by illness, crime or serious accidents and travellers should be sure the company they're travelling with has a good record.
Many people buy
worldwide travel insurance and head overseas looking to experience a bungee jump, a skydive or some other form of extreme activity, but they need to make sure they're with a good company.
Paul Martin, development manager at Gapforce, said: "Travellers should go with a reputable gap year organisation and with someone who is a member of the Year Out Group for instance, which helps regulate people who take travellers overseas."
He added that backpackers can also make sure they're going with a company that has the British Standard for overseas adventure, the BS 8848.
The US has become the most popular destinations in the world for gap year travel since Barack Obama was elected president, according to One Life Live.
