Backpackers looking for work in New Zealand's wine industry have the option of buying
online travel insurance before leaving home.
Speaking to the Marlborough Express, vineyard owner Allan Scott commented that casual workers such as backpackers and local residents are always available to help out at his wine-making site.
Mr Scott said that pruning, picking and thinning are just some of the tasks that he delegates to around 12 part-time workers.
"People call in or otherwise come to us through word-of-mouth," he told the publication.
The wine-maker added that vineyards need labour if they are to stay afloat during the global recession, a fact that could be of interest to backpackers with
gap year travel insurance.
Meanwhile, Travellers Autobarn has announced that it will be offering campervans for rent in New Zealand from this month, allowing travellers to explore the country at a small cost.
Company managing director Peter Burke said that most backpackers visit New Zealand after Australia, but that a key difference is many stay for less than six weeks and are living on savings.
