Gap year travel insurance could help backpackers looking for volunteer placements when travelling abroad.
It has been claimed that a growing number of people taking gap years are looking to take up volunteer work, meaning
online travel insurance could be the perfect way to help backpackers ensure their journey is adequately covered.
According to Gapforce, an organisation that specialises in expeditions and programmes to remote destinations around the world, volunteer placements offer a "meaningful way of travelling".
Nadia Daer, trekker coordinator for Gapforce, added that the variety of volunteer placements available means "there's so many skills that you can then put on your CV".
According to recent research published by One Life Live, 54 per cent of the population dream about taking a break to travel or volunteer overseas.
The study added that 350,000 have realised their dream over the past 12 months.
A growing number of older people are now travelling with their children on gap years, it has been suggested.
The current recession has also increased interest in gap years. As people lose their jobs and face a tough time finding new employment, many are taking out
worldwide travel insurance before heading off on an extended break.
