Backpackers deciding whether to buy a seat on a low-cost flight could choose to get hold of
worldwide travel insurance before they leave home.
Although cheap flights may appeal to many, travelsupermarket.com has said that the abundance of low-cost options available does not guarantee that travellers will opt for them.
Peter Smith, a travel expert for the website, said that many people are thinking twice about booking cheap flights as they're also considering the costs they'll face when they actually get to their destination.
Mr Smith said: "You can still pick up a holiday to Spain, for example, not far off £100 but that's not to say someone will book that - they will consider what they spend when they get there as well."
He added that fewer people have been heading to the US and Europe recently due to the strength of the dollar and the euro.
Backpackers planning a trip further afield have the option of buying
gap year travel insurance.
Around seven per cent of travellers aim to spend less than £10 a day while overseas this year, according to figures from Holiday Extras.com.
