Backpackers dealing with protective parents have the option of seeking
online travel insurance before heading off on their adventures.
Harry Wilder, a 19-year-old British backpacker enjoying his gap year, is being tracked around Australia by his mother, Rachel, by way of a satellite navigation device that reveals his exact location 24 hours a day.
The backpacker's uncle built the TRAAKiT device that fits in the palm of the hand and can be used as an internet tracking tool - a potential security measure that could work alongside
cheap travel insurance.
While some may balk at the idea of a parental tracking system, Mr Wilder said that carrying the device has actually been a positive experience: "It has actually worked in my favour because if they can see where I am, I don't get constant phone calls asking how I am."
The young traveller has already been to popular international destinations such as Canada and Kenya, although he did not get the tracking device until a friend met up with him from the UK.
In related news, Travel Daily News recently reported that the Youth Hostel Association is building a new site in Brisbane, Australia.
