Backpackers and other holidaymakers worried that they might have problems with immigration officials overseas have the option of buying
cheap travel insurance.
Three Texan backpackers were recently refused entry to Ireland as they hadn't yet booked a place to stay and they had no proof of how much spending money they had with them.
Since then, the young men have been offered free return flights, a week's accommodation and free meals, along with $1,000 (£622) of spending money by the D4hotels group, to make up for their experience.
Anthony Kelly of D4Hotels, told the Dallas Morning News: "Tourism is and always has been a major part of our economy and Ireland has always been one of the premier destinations in the world for American tourists."
The Irish Times reports that the young men are part of online travel community couchsurfing.com, where people all over the world allow backpackers, many of whom may have
gap year travel insurance, to sleep on their couches for free.
Couchsurfing.com has grown rapidly and recently celebrated getting is one millionth member.
