The continuing drama in Bangkok airport has demonstrated the importance of
backpacker travel insurance when planning overseas trips.
According to the Australian, anti-government protestors took over the airport last week causing massive disruption and leaving up to half a million tourists stranded inside. While some provincial flights have been allowed to go ahead, plans are being made to transport tourists to Phuket to be flown home. The Australian government announced that 900 seats will be made available with the intention of getting Australian nationals home.
A 23 year-old American backpacker, referred to as John, told the website: "We don't feel safe in Bangkok anymore. My friends and I have decided to go to Pattaya and try and get out of the country from there. Man, this is unbelievable. We're very stressed."
Pattaya is a holiday resort situated a two-hour drive from the city, which is becoming the target-destination of many tourists and backpackers.
Cheap travel insurance is vital for trips overseas in case people fall victim to unpredictable events such as this.
