Canada has been ranked as one of the top ten countries in the world to visit by the international travel guide Lonely Planet.
The guide is especially popular amongst backpackers and other young travellers, and praises Canada for its stunning natural beauty and spectacular wilderness. The guide expects the country to become a real magnet for backpackers in the coming years, many of whom will apply for a work visa enabling them to earn money as the travel.
The guide's writers said: "Canada is too polite to say so, but it's ready to be feted. Winter or summer, Canada is a land of action, with an insane amount of terrain to play on."
Specific events highlighted for attention include Quebec's Festival de International de Jazz de Montreal, the Calgary Stampede in Alberta and the Ford World Men's Curling Championships which is held in New Brunswick.
Backpackers are increasingly attracted to areas of the world that offer spectacular scenery, while the opportunity to work along the way also appeals.
