Gap year travel insurance is an option for backpackers planning to follow the crowds to Australia's Gold Coast.
According to Goldcoast.com.au, figures from Tourism Australia reveal that 2008 saw a three per cent year-on-year increase in the number of backpackers visiting Queensland's Gold Coast, while tourism revenue rose by over nine per cent.
Overall, the region experienced fewer international visitors, but those that did brave the global economic turmoil spent more money.
Martin Winter, chief executive officer of Gold Coast Tourism, told the website: "National, state and regional international visitor numbers have been impacted [by the global downturn], but the Gold Coast has held on to its visitors for longer periods and given them reason to spend more money in the city."
Over 460,000 foreign students and backpackers visited Queensland through the course of 2008 and around 133,000 backpackers spent time on the Gold Coast. All backpackers have the option of buying
online travel insurance.
The Gold Coast offers a wide range of environments, from rainforests through to world-renowned surfing beaches and theme parks.
