Cheap travel insurance could benefit backpackers on long-haul flights

Backpackers embarking on long-haul flights could buy gap year travel insurance in preparation for their trip.

The Lancet reports that people should make themselves aware of the potential health risks involved with flying, despite the fact that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says that it remains very safe.

Advice from the CAA's Aviation Health Unit states that passengers should be wary of prolonged lack of movement in their lower limbs, but simple exercises can address this.

Dr Ray Johnston, head of the unit, said: "While there has been an increase in recent years in the number of on-board medical emergencies, aviation still has an excellent safety record."

He added that passengers with more specific medical questions should consult their doctor as well as advice from the airline. Worldwide travel insurance could also be an advantage.

CAA figures show that more than a billion people fly every year. Over the next 20 years this number is forecast to double.
