Backpackers travelling to the Solomon Islands should seek the necessary insurance cover before setting off on their trip.
The Solomon Star reports that authorities in the Solomon Islands are looking to boost tourism in the region by investing in infrastructure and increasing the number of flights to increase accessibility. The country has developed a six-year plan designed to get the best out of the region and raise the region's international profile. Expanding airline connectivity is seen as one of the major issues and improved facilities will be necessary to increase visitations.
John Taisia, senior tourism officer for Western and Choiseul, told the Solomon Star: "Because tourists travel into the provinces the benefit of tourism extends beyond Honiara. In addition, purchases of handicrafts exceed $7 million and much of this income is returned to villages."
The Solomon Islands offer stunning natural landscapes and good backpacker facilities, so the region has a strong appeal for travellers in Australia and south-east Asia.
