People planning a trip to the rugged wilderness of Australia's Fraser Island could first buy
worldwide travel insurance.
The Gympie Times reports that two local experts have called for people with knowledge of the regional terrain to accompany backpackers looking to explore the island by car.
Paul Chant and Wayne Hayes work for Rainbow Recovery and are the latest people to call for changes in tourism practices following a recent vehicle accident on the uneven Fraser Island terrain that claimed two lives.
Mr Chant told the website: "For every six troop carriers that go out with backpackers, there should be a local person leading the way and setting the speed."
He added that vehicles frequently come onto the island filled with people and equipment and are very vulnerable to sudden lurches and bumps.
One-way travel insurance is an option for backpackers looking for added security when heading out into the wilds.
Fraser Island is situated off the coast of Queensland.
