Gap year travel insurance is vital for youngsters planning trips abroad, the government has warned.
The advice comes as a recent YouGov poll for the Department for Transport found more than half of Brits fail to check whether their holiday is protected when they make a booking.
Furthermore, 43 per cent of those surveyed admitted they would not know who to approach to ascertain their booking is protected.
Transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "Half of the people surveyed are planning a trip in the next 12 months so we want to ensure that holidaymakers have the right information about what they can do to protect their holidays."
Consequently he has spearheaded a new website offering advice on the financial safeguards available to travellers, as well as guidance when choosing protection schemes.
One way travel insurance may be useful when booking flights directly through an airline as the website warns passengers that they will not be covered by Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (ATOL) if the company goes bust.
