People planning to head overseas on their own this year always have the option of buying
worldwide travel insurance before they leave home.
The number of Britons heading abroad on their own has increased by nearly five per cent over the past five years and five million people are planning solo trips for this year, according to figures from Mintel.
Many people choose to join group holidays as they're more fun on a social level, while thetravelmagazine.net says more married couples are heading overseas alone as they have different tastes.
Anthony Page, editor of solotravel.org, said: "Up and coming destinations for solos heading out with organised groups are Latin America, Costa Rica and Peru - [these] are hot destinations at the moment."
He added that many hostels cater for people travelling alone as well as for backpackers exploring in groups of friends.
Gap year travel insurance is always an option for solo backpackers.
