More school leavers will be taking out
gap year travel insurance during 2009 as charities look for an increase in the number of volunteers, it has been suggested.
Research from Travelocity has shown that, while people thinking of taking a year out before university still want to volunteer abroad, they are becoming increasingly concerned about the cost of travelling overseas.
The findings also showed that volunteering is among the priorities for many Americans going into the new year - along with travelling and learning something new.
Commenting on the research, Jeffrey Glueck, chief marketing officer at Travelocity, said: "Whether or not it's on the list of new year's resolutions, a volunteer vacation can truly change a person's perspective and remind us of what's most important in life."
School leavers with
gap year travel insurance can travel to South Africa to volunteer in the fight against poverty or voyage to Madagascar to learn about the behaviour of carnivores.
More people are predicted to take gap years to escape the current economic climate.
