Worldwide travel insurance should be considered a priority for anyone planning a trip to South Africa to take advantage of the cheap rand.
According to iol.co.za, South Africa may have a better chance of surviving the global economic downturn through a weakening in the value of the rand. While hotel occupancy has fallen in South Africa, the fall of the rand means that international backpackers and other travellers can get more for their money and so are more likely to buy
cheap travel insurance and visit the country.
Nick Seewer, managing director of Mount Nelson Hotel and Orient-Express Hotels Africa, told the website: "We're in a really lucky position. Our rand means their money can go further than other destinations."
The fall in value seems to affecting budget travellers the most, with many hostels still reporting healthy occupancy rates. Many people are unwilling to give up on their holiday but are willing to stay in less expensive accommodation to save money.
Gap year travel insurance is recommended for younger backpackers.
