Backpackers inspired by a controversial new campaign to visit Australia could first buy
gap year travel insurance.
The Courier Mail reports that sun and sex have been put front and centre for a new advertising campaign designed to encourage more backpackers to visit tropical north Queensland. All visitors have the option of buying
cheap travel insurance.
Dubbed Gotta Love the Wet Season, the new campaign from Tropical Tourism North Queensland highlights wet T-shirt competitions in Cairns over more conventional images of the stunning regional landscape.
Stephen Olle, chairman of the tourism organisation, said: "Sex and raunchiness is part of the backpacker market but it is certainly not all of it. They do the trips to the reef, the tours, the dive courses and they go out and make a night of it."
Despite local criticism about the campaign potentially alienating families, over half a million people have viewed wet T-shirt competition footage on YouTube which is accessed by using the 'Cairns Australia' search phrase.
Cairns is favoured as a party town by backpackers and there is widespread support for longer bar opening hours.
