According to Wanderlust magazine, travellers' access to destinations in the Far East could be threatened by rising airfares.
Figures from the Post Office show that in some circumstances a trip to the Far East can be cheaper than travelling to the Mediterranean. Destinations in Vietnam and Thailand are particularly popular with backpackers, frequently as part of a stopover on the way to Australia or New Zealand.
Sarah Baxter, deputy editor of Wanderlust magazine, said: "You can get a really good deal on a flight to Bangkok and once you are there, you are pretty much saving the money on your sun cream and your meals out."
Many backpackers are attracted by the vibrant culture of the Far East, as well as the idyllic beaches and warm equatorial climate. While rising prices might have a derogatory effect on visitor numbers, more backpackers are saving before a trip so as to be able to afford to get the most out of their travels.
