The Independent newspaper has examined the cost of a gap year and suggested some steps people can take to make it an affordable experience.
Research from price comparison site Fairinvestment.co.uk suggests that the average gap year now costs more than £4,000.
With this in mind the Independent advises would-be travellers to start saving as soon as possible and highlighted the fact that Bradford & Bingley's internet saver account offers interest of 6.51 per cent while an Isa account can let you have tax-free savings up to £3,600.
It is best to be aware that most debit and credit card companies levy a loading fee of around 2.75 per cent on all purchases made abroad. Handling fees of up to two per cent are also applicable when using foreign cash machines.
Steve Willey, of Moneysupermarket.com, told the Independent: "Gappers should consider getting a Nationwide Flex current account, because it is the only UK provider that doesn't impose foreign currency charges."
Mobile phone charges can also soon mount up, which is why the Independent advises buying a local sim card if you are going to be staying in one country for any length of time.
