American Express has come up with a list of top tips to help gap year travellers store their cash safely while they are abroad.
New research conducted by the company found that 16 per cent of gappers think the best place to store all their cash overseas is in their jeans pocket.
Over one in ten (12 per cent) said they would put all their cash in their rucksack or handbag - easy prey for thieves.
American Express advises sending an email to yourself containing any information you may need in case of an emergency such as insurance details and emergency numbers for a lost or stolen card.
American Express's Sarah Harrison commented: "We encourage travellers to take what we call a mixed wallet - a combination of cash, cards and travellers cheques.
"Travellers cheques are protected against loss or theft so if anything happens to your money, you can rest assured, as they are normally replaced within 24 hours."
Backpacker travel insurance could also come to your rescue if a theft disrupts your trip of a lifetime.
