People enjoying water sports in New Zealand could benefit from one-way travel insurance in addition to making sure they take basic precautions.
Matt Claridge, general manager of Water Safety New Zealand, told the Press that many of the accidents that had taken place over the New Zealand summer happened because people failed to take even the most basic precautions.
He said that simple factors such as a lack of lifejackets and excessive drinking were still major issues, while failing to check weather forecasts and not taking a decent radio or other communications device also contributed to problems.
Mr Claridge told the paper: "They have typically been recreation-based activities causing most incidents, which basically means they are preventable. They are based on skills, knowledge and attitude."
The manager described huge rescue operations that had been launched in response to easily preventable accidents.
New Zealand offers a huge range of water sports, with Queenstown particularly renowned for white water rafting.
