AAP reports that a surfer suffered an evening attack in which he almost lost his hand, but is now recovering in hospital.
There is concern about the effect that news of the attack will have on day visitors to the iconic Sydney beach.
A huge number of people visit Bondi Beach but Max Siano, vice president of the Bondi Chamber of Commerce, thinks that people who were planning a daytrip to the beach may now think twice.
Mr Siano told the news agency: "It will affect trade because Bondi Beach is visited by 85 per cent of all visitors that come to Australia."
He added that backpackers were less likely to move away from the beach.
Shark attacks are normally quite rare in Australia, although the predators can sometimes be confused by surfboards on the surface resembling seals.
