Unconventional travel destinations like Bulgaria are booming as Brits combine
cheap travel insurance with low-cost countries, an expert maintains.
The country recently topped the Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer, which found Bulgaria's Sunny Beach resort was two and a half times cheaper than Antigua - the most expensive destination surveyed.
At around £42 for ten holiday items, including drinks and meals, it could fast become a favourite among
backpacker travel insurance holders.
However, a spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito) insists Bulgaria has much more to offer than bargains alone.
He says: "It's not mature but it is fairly undiscovered. They've got a great grading for what people want and that is one of the attractions for Bulgaria."
Other countries that came out on top of the Post Office survey include Turkey and Croatia, while local prices have also dropped in Greece and Italy.
