An increasing number of people are looking to travel abroad to take part in adventure activities rather than simply spending time lounging on a beach to recharge their batteries, it has been claimed.
Research conducted by global travel experiences company isango! shows that while beach holidays remain desirable, activity holidays, city breaks and road trips are becoming more and more popular.
The 2,000 people polled in the survey said their perfect holiday would combine adventure, culture and sun, while a separate study by Mintel shows activity holidays are outperforming the rest of the travel market.
Commenting on the trend, Ian Bradley, spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito), said: "People are feeling that they want to be more active on holiday rather than just purely relaxing on the beach or just doing a city break.
"They want to feel like they are maybe learning a new skill or they are working out where they are and seeing wonderful places around the world."
One thing to consider for backpackers going on an adventure holiday to celebrate the end of an exam period or in the lead up to a job or university is to secure adequate
backpacker travel insurance.
According to Switchcover, around 100,000 teenagers will go on holiday this year without insurance cover.
