The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued a warning to backpackers heading to Koh Phangan in Thailand.
The island has become incredibly popular with revellers due to its full moon parties, which see thousands of people descending on the golden beaches to dance the night away.
However, over the past few years the level of crime has been steadily rising, with travellers being targeted for their money or passports and safes at hotels hosting visitors being raided.
While the trends highlight the importance of having a comprehensive travel insurance plan, the FCO claims it has received a number of reports this year of incidents "where western tourists have been victims of vicious unprovoked assaults by gangs".
The advice being handed out to backpackers is to apply considerable caution when around the bars in Haad Rin, or even to avoid them altogether at night or during the full moon parties.
Furthermore, the FCO has explained that six Britons have been killed in Thailand over the past two to three years and that date rape cases are on the rise.
