Writing in the Newark Examiner, Susan Diem described the blankets as an essential part of any traveller's first aid equipment.
According to Ms Diem, the reflective blankets help retain wearers' body heat in cold conditions while their high-visibility provides a useful signal to rescue teams.
Water and wind-proof, space blankets can also double as an emergency shelter, she added.
Ms Diem said backpackers have no reason not to pack the handy accessory, as they fold down to the size of a cigarette packet and cost no more than $4 (£2.42).
Meanwhile, advice site TraditionalMountaineering.org warns space blankets should be used correctly.
A spokesperson for the site said hikers should also carry extra insulating clothing and foam pads to sleep on.
