Writing for the Newark Backpacking Examiner, Susan Diem suggests keen adventurers could avoid an expensive shopping trip by using everyday materials.
Ms Diem recommends looking up Ray Way's sewing kits, which include instructions for making tents, sleeping bags and backpacks.
A spokesperson for Ray Way said: "Literally thousands of people who have never sewn before have completed our kits without problems.
"All that is required is a bit of patience, and the determination to follow our instructions carefully."
According to the firm's website, a tent can be constructed from tarpaulin while a sleeping bag can be crafted using a quilt and a foam pad.
Earlier this month saw bargain-hungry backpackers camping out for £10 flights to Australia.
Travel Agent STA Travel was offering limited numbers of the low-priced tickets to celebrate its 30th birthday.
