Francesca Ecsery, global sales director of Cheapflights, said: "The tradition of a two-week summer holiday has evolved into taking a series of shorter breaks, with some travellers looking to minimise their spend in the recession, while others aren't willing to take an extended break from the office."
"The recession is not only hitting the travel industry hard, but may be creating long-term trends in consumers' holiday habits," she added.
A new survey released by the travel comparison site said 55 per cent of respondents prefer to take a shorter holiday of one week or less.
The news follows figures revealed by the Office of National Statistics suggesting the number of overseas trips made by Britons has fallen by ten per cent in the last year.
