ABC news reports that despite expectations of a drop in tourist numbers, the area surrounding the city of Darwin has seen an increase in visitors this year.
Australia's tourism forecasting committee report expected a four per cent drop in overseas travellers visiting the country in 2009.
Travel company Tourism Top End's general manager Tony Clementson told ABC news that the increase in popularity was unexpected.
"The budget backpacker sector appears to be quite robust...there's a lot of tourists in town," he added.
