Travel portal trivago's hotel price index revealed that prices are not following the usual pattern as hotel owners drop rates to increase occupancy.
A spokesperson for trivago said that even "consistently expensive" countries such as Sweden are seeing discounts of around 18 per cent.
Overall, European hotel prices are seven per cent cheaper in comparison to July 2008 while popular cities such as Rome and Barcelona are seeing price-cuts of 25 per cent.
A standard double room in one of the top European cities now costs £90, compared to £97 in the same period last year.

Four markets were shown to have experienced occupancy increases including Stockholm and Gothenberg in Sweden and the UK's London and Birmingham.
