Backpacker accident in Australia highlights need for online travel insurance

An accident involving two Canadian backpackers in Darwin, Australia, has highlighted the need for backpackers to secure online travel insurance.

According to ntnews.com.au, the pair was travelling through Darwin on a motorbike when they struck a car in the early hours. The backpackers were rushed to hospital but one of the men, aged 27, later died. His 25 year-old friend suffered critical injuries and was kept in the intensive care unit of Royal Darwin Hospital.

Police said the precise circumstances of the accident were still being investigated but it was thought that the backpackers were not wearing their helmets properly when the crash took place.

A total of 65 people have been killed on the roads of Australia's Northern Territory so far this year. The accident further highlights the need for backpackers to buy online travel insurance to cover themselves in the event of an incident.

Travellers should also ensure that safety equipment is used properly and that extra care is taken when using roads at night.
