According to the Sydney Morning Herald, many backpackers who found themselves in Sydney, Australia on New Year's Eve decided to work in order to fund the next leg of their trip. With Australian flags, glow sticks and a range of other fun party toys in demand as the spectacular fireworks display beckoned in Sydney Harbour, local firms needed people willing to work through the festivities.
Teenage Brit backpacker Reuben Gaines spent New Year's Eve selling sparklers and told the website: "I don't know that many people in the country anyway and it's a good chance for me to save some money for a campervan to travel in."
Other backpackers opted to work through the night so that they could bag a front-row seat for the fireworks when the clock struck midnight.
