Backpackers planning on exploring Australia on unusual modes of transport should first seek

The Muswellbrook Chronicle reports that German backpackers Jan Hagedorn and Johannes Huth have decided to take the unusual step of cycling and skateboarding from Cairns, in the north-east tip of Australia, down to Sydney. The pair left Cairns in late September and planned to arrive in Sydney on Christmas Day, although it seems they may arrive a day earlier than expected.
Jan told the website: "We do enjoy it; it's different to normal backpacking because we have gone inland and have been able to meet lots of Australian people."
The two backpackers have been travelling at least 40 kilometres every day, although the hot weather has forced them to rest through much of each afternoon. Noodles, rice and potatoes have sustained them over the weeks, while Bavarian beer awaits them in Sydney, courtesy of a friend.
Worldwide travel insurance is recommended for backpackers seeking to head off the beaten track in Australia.
