According to Northern Territory News, Darwin residents have been complaining about noisy backpackers illegally camping on the beach and leaving underwear hanging out to dry.
Michael Gunner of Darwin city council said numbers of the unwelcome visitors had "definitely" risen this year.
"I can understand why people want to camp there and word of mouth gets around pretty quick," he added.
The city's lord mayor is said to be considering other options for the campers including moving them to football stadiums or shopping centre car parks, which could benefit from their extra business.
An earlier report by the local paper revealed three East Point backpackers received an unpleasant wake-up call when they were verbally abused and attacked with bottles at around 03:30 local time.
Police have so far been unable to identify the offenders, claims the Northern Territory News.
