Fifth on the list was Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, from the popular children's television series first screened in the 1960s.
Mr Jackman who plays Wolverine in the X-Men series of films could take over from the current face of Aussie tourism, model Lara Bingle.
Trends expert Daniel Levine said Ms Bingle's Where the bloody hell are you? campaign had limited appeal.
"That humour really works in Australia, but I think it fell flat abroad," he said.
An earlier and reportedly more successful campaign by Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan featured the famous phrase: "Throw another shrimp on the barbie."
The poll was conducted by market research firm Roy Morgan in the run up to next week's Tourism Futures conference on the Australian Gold Coast.
